Helene C. Herbert is a partner in Herbert & Weiss, an Englewood law firm serving clients in Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Tenafly, Cresskill, Closter, Alpine, Norwood, Demarest, Fort Lee, and throughout Bergen County in the areas of divorce and family law, employment law and appellate law. The firm has done significant appellate work and represents several municipalities in tax appeals. Ms. Herbert is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court and the Federal District Court.
As a family law attorney, Ms. Herbert’s practice includes contested and uncontested divorces; litigating alimony, custody, and parenting time disputes; negotiating and drafting prenuptial agreements, marital property settlements, and separation agreements for domestic partnerships and civil unions; as well as amicably resolving issues of alimony, child support, custody, and parenting time issues. She also provides legal counsel to individuals and businesses in matters involving employment discrimination, sexual harassment, and civil rights. Ms. Herbert has over 30 years of litigation experience with both jury and non-jury trials in both State and Federal courts.
Ms. Herbert is an avid gardener and a proud member of both the Garden Club of Englewood and the Garden Club of America. She enjoys riding her bicycle with her husband and friends, and she regularly practices yoga and meditation. Earlier in her career, she was actively involved in politics, finding fulfillment in serving her communities. Above all, Ms. Herbert is known for her deep love of nature and her affection for animals and pets.
A native of northern New Jersey, Helene Herbert obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at William Paterson University of New Jersey, where she earned a place on the Dean’s List and the National Honor Society of Psychology Students. She later earned her Juris Doctor law degree across the Hudson at the City University of New York, where she served on the Committee for Academic Standing, the Scholastic Standing Committee, and on the General Assembly for the Student Government.
Ms. Herbert completed a two-year post-law school general litigation program with, “The Arthur T. Vanderbilt American Inn of Court.”
Ms. Herbert is a municipal court judge in the Borough of Waldwick and formerly of Bergenfield. She also regularly sits in nearby courts.
Ms. Herbert serves on the Early Settlement Panel program, assisting in settling matrimonial cases in the Superior Court, Bergen County, New Jersey. She recently concluded her position as Chair of the District IIB Ethics Committee for the New Jersey courts. She has also served as a prosecutor in the Boroughs of Moonachie, Little Ferry, and Bergenfield. In addition, Ms. Herbert has co-managed a legal counseling project for the Women’s Rights Information Center Legal Project for 30 years, she was co-counsel for the Shelter Our Sisters Legal Advocacy project, and a participating attorney for the Bergen County Legal Advocacy Project for the Victims of Domestic Violence. Presently, Herbert & Weiss is managing and advocating for victims at the Women’s Rights Information Center law project in Englewood, NJ.
Helene Herbert has been honored by Women Lawyers in Bergen County for being an attorney and “Trailblazer.” She has received Certificates of Commendation for Outstanding Service to Victims of Domestic Violence from the Bergen County Board of Chosen Freeholders and for Outstanding Service to Victims of Domestic Violence from the Bergen County Department of Human Services. Additionally, she has been honored by Shelter our Sisters for advocacy for Bergen County families and recognized by the State of New Jersey General Assembly and Senate for contributions to Bergen County families.
